My Life as a Gay Man in a Straight Woman's Body by Carol Sherman-Jones Five Star, $14.95 trade paperback

Reviewed by Anthony Glassman

There are currently around six billion people living on this planet. That means there are six billion stories, six billion roads traveled, six billion sets of footprints. Some of the journeys are fairly straightforward: Born, grow, love, die. Others involve some detours, a bit of backtracking.

Carol Sherman-Jones' trek, however, has been both circuitous and glorious, taking her from her childhood home in Brooklyn, New York, to high school in Tucson, Arizona and finally depositing her in Cincinnati.

"tripping," doing illicit chemical substances, wrestling with a dwarf in lime Jell-O, engaging in unfulfilling relationships and eventually settling in the Queen City, owning a bar, getting married and, theoretically, living happily ever after.

Carol's Corner Café could not possibly be any more inviting, engaging, entertaining and loving than the woman who turned it into a mainstay of the queer community. She tells her story with poignant, often self-deprecat-

MY LIFE GAY MAX STRAIGHT

WOMAN'S BODY

Carul Sherman Jones

To paraphrase a cliché, what's a nice Jewish girl like her doing in a place like this? Opening a gay bar, becoming a centerpiece of the LGBT community, and proving how important heterosexual allies are in the quest for gay and lesbian civil rights.

This book is the tale of her trip through life, occasionally either tripping or

ing wit, never spiteful or vindictive. When dealing with people who did her wrong, she is far more likely to shrug and move on than rant and rave about them, and, when talking about people she truly loves, the pages all but glow.

The warmth and affection poured into this book make it one of the truly worthwhile non-fiction tomes of the last couple of years.

Best of all, Carol ShermanJones is still out there, in the thick of it all. In fact, she performed at the Cincinnati Pride music festival in Hoffner Park on June 8 with Sherry McCamley, bringing her pride in the community she has chosen to the throngs who attended.

FAIRVIEW MASSOTHERAPY

Peel away the layers

by Anthony Glassman

Javier Bardem, left, and Jordi Molla enjoy an intimate moment at their favorite restaurant in Segunda Piel (Second Skin).

Bardem, nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of gay Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in the film Before Night Falls, plays Diego, a surgeon in love with Alberto (Molla). Despite the intensity of their feelings for each other, there is something that threatens to tear them apart: Alberto's marriage to Elena (Ariadna Gil). As Alberto shifts his fidelity from one to the other, Diego and Elena come closer to meeting each other and seeing through both of the skins Alberto wears. Segunda Piel, a 1999 Spanish release, is just beginning to make the art house circuit here in the United States, and will play at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Blvd., in University Circle. The dates for the screenings are July 19 to 21, showing at 7:15 pm on Friday, 9:45 on Saturday and 9:05 on Sunday. Admission is $7, $4 for Cinematheque members, and no one under 18 will be allowed. For more information. call the Cinematheque at 216-421-7450 or see their web site at ww.cia.edu/ cinematheque.
